Do skip hire companies recycle?

If you have walked past a skip recently, you may have wondered what skip hire companies do with the waste materials? Also, do they recycle?

In this blog, Staffordshire Skip Hire will tell you what happens when our skips are taken away.

Knowing what waste management companies do with different types of waste may give you some inspiration on how to recycle and solutions for domestic and commercial scrap materials.

Working on a building project or clearing out your overgrown garden accumulates large amounts of waste plus people may not have the time to dispose of waste correctly.

Recycling explained for skip companies

Recycling is always the best solution to prevent large amounts of waste from ending up in landfill sites. Sadly, the amount of rubbish in landfills continues to grow with waste management companies looking to take waste to appropriate recycling facilities instead.

Hiring a skip is so much more than just getting rid of waste materials. Actions include collecting, sorting, and recycling the different types of waste. The extent of recycling often varies, depending on the individual skip hire company.

Here at Staffordshire Skip Hire, we are committed to maintaining the highest recycling rate to ensure very little waste ends up in landfills.

After collecting skips, waste management companies like us will separate the materials, garden waste, and scrap metal. We make sure that waste disposal is done ethically and as sustainable as possible.

Why is recycling important?

The percentage of household recycling in England has increased to around 45% in 2019/20. Hiring a skip helps to increase the amount of waste being sent to the correct recycling facility. Recycling companies manufacture products back into new products or packaging, which benefits our environment.

There is an increasing concern about fly-tipping, with rubbish being dumped on streets and public highways. This is why it can be useful to have a large space for accessible and sustainable waste disposal – like a skip.

Working with Staffordshire Skip Hire

As waste management specialists, we are proud to say we pride ourselves on recycling. We always try to take items to the right recycling facility so that items don’t end up in landfill sites.

We offer different sizes of skips depending on the amount of waste you may accumulate. If you need help with waste disposal or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us today.

How The Pandemic Has Changed The Way We Look At Waste

Here in the UK we are very much known as a throwaway nation, much like the USA. With many items being single-use, and then ending up at a landfill. The Covid-19 pandemic has very much impacted the amount of waste that households are currently producing. We have seen a rise in the amount of general household waste, and a decrease in the use of recycling. The start of the pandemic also saw a great decline in skip hire, which we can safely say is no longer the case. So how has the pandemic affected how we dispose of our waste, and how can we improve this moving forward.

Single-Use In The Pandemic

The use of single-use items in the pandemic has vastly increased. This is mainly to help reduce the level of infection and reduce the risk of spreading. This means that there is very little that we can do about the number of masks and gloves that people are using, especially as they play a vital part in keeping our NHS safe from the virus. However, what about the single-use items that you may use around the home and office.
There are single-use items that we can look to reduce in our day to day life in order to bring the level of waste back to pre-covid levels. Look at swapping out those plastic bottles of water that you are drinking daily for a refillable bottle. This can reduce plastic waste that ends up in the landfill, along with recycling where possible. If your office currently does not have recycling facilities, look at championing this and getting it in place moving forward.

Food Waste

Throughout the pandemic, a number of councils stopped collecting food waste bins, with many still yet to start again. This means that food waste has been put into the general household waste, to eventually end up at the landfill. Where possible, why not invest in a compost bin. This can then turn into a great source of nutrition for your plants in the garden.

Skip Hire

As we mentioned, the start of the pandemic saw a vast decrease in the use of skip hire. This has unfortunately meant that the waste we normally see, that gets recycled, has been entering the general waste and arriving at landfill sites by the truckload.
We are glad to see that this is no longer the case and skip hire is booming more than ever. This allows the team here at Staffordshire Skip Hire to play their part in combating the level of waste and recycle where possible.

Moving Forward

Pre-pandemic, we saw the nation making great strides in reducing the waste that we produce. Sadly, the pandemic has put us right back where we started. Moving forward, we would like to encourage our customers to recycle wherever they possibly can, reduce the level of food waste that their household produces, and for the bigger projects, hire a skip and let us worry about the recycling!

Why Metal Recycling Is Important

All different types of metal are some of the most important resources on the planet, with stock starting to run low. This is why skip hire companies such as Staffordshire Skip Hire are constantly stressing the importance of recycling scrap metal. Here are three reasons why you should also recycle metal:

Help the Environment – Extracting, refining and producing metal is extremely damaging to the environment, releasing greenhouse gases and metal particles into local ecosystems. Recycling it means we can still enjoy metal supplies without harming the planet.

Save Energy – Energy prices seem to be going up year after year, but recycling metal can help prevent this. It takes plenty of energy to extract virgin ore from the ground and make it into useable material. By recycling one tonne of steel, greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by up to 86%, according to industry statistics. Recycling one kilogram of aluminium can actually save enough energy to power a television for three days!

Create Jobs – Across Europe, the aim is to have recycling rates of 70% by 2030, which is just nine years away. Recycling metal is one of the labour-intensive processes, so by doing your bit you will be supporting the economy and the environment.
