Maximising The Space In Your Skip

When it comes to hiring a skip, we typically recommend that you hire a skip a size up from what you think you need. This is primarily because you will always find more than you anticipated to go in the skip.

Bulky Items

Sometimes the whole reason we hire a skip is to get rid of bulky items. Think sofas, chairs, cupboards and even bathroom suites. However, if you are trying to get the most out of your skip, it will always be worth breaking everything down as much as you possibly can.
Breaking cupboards down so that they are simply flat panels will always work in your favour, and layering these at the base or sides of your skip will help them to take up as little room as possible.
With sofas, while we understand that these can be more difficult to break up, we still recommend getting them as broken up as possible. However, if they cannot be broken up, we recommend putting them in first. This enables you to pile the remainder of your waste on top.

Softer Items

You might be tempted to get all the heavier and bulky waste to the bottom of your skip. However, by popping your softer or crushable items at the bottom, the heavier items can crush them down, allowing you to make the most out of the space.

Plan Your Loading

Where possible, it is best to plan the loading of your skip. This includes taking the above into consideration, but also the other waste that you will be removing from your property.
We recommend any loose waste to go into the bottom of your skip (unless you have the above-mentioned) and any bagged waste on top where possible.
By planning your loading, you can dedicate sections or layers of the skip to specific waste, which can give you an indication of how much space you may have remaining at the end for any additional waste.

Items We Cannot Take

While we might be tempted to put everything we possibly can into the skip, unfortunately, we cannot accept certain items. Primarily we find fridges and freezers in our skips, these are amongst the items that we cannot take. This is due to the nature of the internal workings being considered a hazardous material.
Likewise, we cannot take any materials or substances that are considered hazardous. This includes chemicals, pesticides, asbestos, gas cylinders and medical waste. If you are unsure, please take a look at our page “What can you put in a skip?” or contact the team directly.
